Juneteenth Celebration

Kathy Wilkerson, Director of the New Albany Parks and Recreation and the Arts Council of Southern Indiana collaborated with the Hanover College Rivers Institute Theatre to present “Nothing Stops This Train”, a play about the Underground Railroad. It was June 19, 1865, when slaves heard they were free in Texas. To commemorate this historical event, there was a joyous celebration throughout the south which they named Juneteenth. This tradition is now celebrated throughout the world emphasizing respect, appreciation of freedom and the achievements of many. The play opened to a packed audience in New Albany at the Griffin Street Activity Center, and was attended by local children, seniors, donors and dignitaries.
