Monarch Project

Butterflies have long been the symbol of transformation in art and literature. Monarch butterflies, with their annual migration between the U. S. and Mexico, have become a symbol of endurance, as well. In honor of this inspiring symbol, Sunnyside Master Gardeners have transformed a corner of the Pat Harrison Arts Center property into a Monarch Waystation.

Raised beds provide broad access to humans while the plants will provide nectar to a wide variety of butterflies. What sets a Monarch Waystation apart from a general butterfly garden is the inclusion of milkweed plants. Milkweed is essential to the survival of monarch butterflies because it is the only plant monarch caterpillars can eat.

The garden will be the site of summer festivities celebrating butterflies through art and literature. Future collaborative celebrations are being planned throughout the area.
You are invited to participate in the creation and maintenance of the Waystation. Contributions of landscape materials (mulch, stones or timbers for walls), physical labor during the installation, or financial contributions are all welcomed.
